Labour ministers are refusing to comment on concerns that the party's manifesto pledge to ban foie gras will not be implemented. According to The Guardian, negotiations with Brussels over checks on agricultural products may prevent a ban from happening at all.

Foie gras, illegal to make in the UK but imported from France and other countries, involves the force-feeding of ducks and geese to fatten their livers. It's a painful and miserable life for the birds and a cruel and lonely end.

Previous attempts to ban foie gras by the UK government have fallen at the last hurdle.
