vegan cheeses

Cheese is an important ingredient for many families at Christmas. Luckily, there is now a superb range of vegan-friendly cheeses so that you can choose the right cheese for the recipe or occasion. Founding Vegan Conservatives Member and Co-chair Alison Knight has the low-down:-

Cheddar style

Violife ‘Epic Mature’ Cheddar flavour – great for grating or cut into wedges and place on your cheeseboard with some chutney. Widley available in supermarkets.

Applewood ‘Vegan’ – a lightly smoked hard cheddar-style cheese. Brilliant in cheese on toast, or try on a cheeseboard with pickled walnuts. Widley available in supermarkets.

Blue cheese

Honestly Tasty ‘Veganzola’ – break into chunks and use in a pear and walnut salad – no-one will know it isn’t a dairy cheese. Buy online direct (link below)

Bute Island ‘Blue English style Cheese wedge’ - try melting this into your favourite pasta dish or on crackers with crunchy celery. Available in supermarkets and The Vegan Kind online.

Brie style

Honestly Tasty ‘Bree’ – looks and tastes just like Brie, use on a cheeseboard, or stuff into a pastry case with cranberry sauce for an easy festive canape or starter.

Parmesan

Violife ‘Prosociano, Vegan Parmesan’ this salty, tasty hard cheese will have you wondering why you didn’t go vegan years ago! Grate it onto pasta and pizza or break little chunks off and pair it with a sweet wine or slices of fresh pear for a dessert treat.

Feta style

Sainsbury’s ‘Deliciously FREEFROM Greek-style – The first time I had this I had to check the label because it was so much like a dairy Feta cheese. Toss cubes into a Greek salad or to top a pizza.

Cream cheeses

Bute Island ‘Original Spread’ is excellent in sweet or savoury dishes. Use in cheesecakes or spread on a pancake and drizzle with maple syrup. Heaven.

Bute Island ‘Garlic and herb spread – brilliant in sandwiches and on hot toast, or on a little cracker for nibbles with drinks

Speciality and gift packs

Treat yourself or a loved one to a box of deliciousness from Tyne Chease or Honestly tasty.

The ‘Truffle’ from Tyne Chease is unctuous and worth paying that little bit extra for.
